Pakistan Government Launches Electric Vehicle Initiative with Focus on Women, Youth, and Lower-Income Groups

Pakistan is on track to usher in a new era of green transportation by launching the country’s largest electric vehicle (EV) facilitation program that aims to promote environment friendly vehicles and enhance people’s ability to travel and earn a livelihood. This ambitious plan includes handing out over 100,000 electric motorcycles and 300,000 electric rickshaws and loaders. A significant 25 percent of these vehicles are dedicated to the exclusive use of women_, a laudable step for gender inclusion.

There is a particular focus on the opportunities offered to unemployed young people and those from lower socio economic groups. It seeks to provide them avenues of livelihood involving affordable access to electric rickshaws and loaders. And, the highest performing students will win free electric bikes.

The Prime Minister said that with the transition to electric vehicles, the country is looking at saving massive amounts of foreign exchange–maybe billions–by cutting down on fuel imports. This reorientation also converges with more general interests sustainable development and environmental protection.

In line with immediate gains, the project is seen to breathe life into the domestic automotive industry. It has already acted as catalyst for the launch of 4 new battery plants in Pakistan and new business ventures and jobs are bound to come consequently. To guarantee the public’s safety and the vehicles’ quality, the government will set up strict safety and quality examination requirements for electric cars, which shall be examined and verified by third-party, independent organizations. A national drive will also be initiated to spread the word on the benefits of — and how to put into action — the scheme. Continuing efforts will also explore production and servicing as well as an integrated EV ecosystem that includes a charging infrastructure. This extensive program demonstrates the government’s commitment to economic revitalization, youth empowerment, and sustainable mobility.
